SAMPLE QUESTIONS- ROAD NOT TAKEN CBSE – CLASS – IX – ENGLISH



A. Read the extracts carer fully and answer the questions.

1. “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both”              (3)

i)      Bring out the metaphorical comparison of “Two roads”
ii)    What is symbolised as “yellow wood”?
iii)  In brief give us the meaning of the above quoted lines.

2. “Because it was grassy and wanted wear.”        (3)
i)      What character trail of the poet is reflected by the line?
ii)    Define the use of personification in the line.
iii)  Name the poet of the line.

3. “Oh, I kept the first for another day.”        (3)

i)      What is symbolised as “another day”?
ii)    Why did the poet keep the ‘first” for another day?
iii)  Why did he choose the second one?

4. “I shall be telling this with a sign
Somewhere ages and ages hence.”             (3)


i)      What does the word ‘sigh’ reflect?
ii)    Bring out a poetic device used in the lines.
iii)  What will the poet say?

5. “.......................and I-
I took the one less travelled by.”              (3)

i)      Why is ‘I’ repeated?
ii)    What is the tone of the poem?
iii)  What does mean by “less travelled” in other sense?

B. Answer the questions in about 30 – 40 words each.
